Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced preparations for one of the largest prisoner exchanges of the conflict, trading 1,000 Ukrainian POWs for 1,000 Russians. The deal, struck under US mediation, includes a three-day ceasefire over Russia’s Victory Day weekend.
In his video address, Zelensky laid out the details plainly:
“Our contacts with the American side regarding guarantees are also ongoing – guarantees for the implementation and announced by the President of the United States. The prisoner exchange – 1,000 for 1,000 – The Americans assumed responsibility for these guarantees. Ukraine’s Coordination Headquarters has handed… There was American mediation in reaching this arrangement on the exchange, and accordingly, an active role in ensuring it’s fulfilled.”
Zelensky made clear he expects Washington to hold Moscow accountable. He stressed prioritizing Ukrainian lives over other concerns, stating Red Square matters less than bringing captives home.
This comes after over four years of grinding war. With the US stepping in as broker and enforcer, the swap could mark a real humanitarian breakthrough—if Russia follows through. Skeptics will watch closely to see if Putin delivers or if this is just another round of talks that fizzle.
