Berlin is finally getting serious about defense. Germany is moving forward with a major purchase of 400 Tomahawk Block Vb cruise missiles and three Typhon ground launchers from the United States. The deal comes after the Trump administration wisely canceled a temporary long-range missile deployment on German soil that was rushed through under Biden.
This revives Berlin’s original request from last July. The previous plan was always a stopgap until Europe could supposedly build its own systems. That gap remains wide open. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius is now heading to Washington to seal the agreement directly with U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.
Europe’s long-range precision strike weakness has been obvious for years. Relying on American firepower is nothing new, but at least Germany is stepping up with real hardware instead of empty promises. In a dangerous world, buying proven U.S. missiles beats virtue-signaling about strategic autonomy every time.
