Senator Ted Cruz is right to press the Trump administration to formally recognize Somaliland as an independent nation. This stable, self-governing territory has run its own affairs since breaking from chaotic Somalia in 1991, complete with its own military, currency, and democratic elections. Unlike its failed neighbor, Somaliland delivers results and deserves America’s support.
Recognizing Somaliland advances clear American interests. It strengthens maritime security in the critical Red Sea corridor, bolsters counterterrorism efforts against jihadists, and directly counters China’s aggressive expansion in the Horn of Africa. Gulf partners like the UAE already see the value, pouring investments into Berbera port to secure trade routes. America should lead, not follow.
For too long, Washington clung to outdated policies that rewarded Somalia’s dysfunction while ignoring Somaliland’s success story. Cruz’s call echoes a realist foreign policy: back reliable partners who share our values and help contain rivals. Recent interest from Israel and Taiwan shows momentum is building.
President Trump should act decisively. Formal recognition costs little but delivers strategic gains against Beijing and secures vital sea lanes. Somaliland is ready. It’s time America stood with strength and common sense.
