This is no empty threat from a weakened regime. Coming after months of clashes with Israel and the US, it is a direct challenge to global energy security and a blatant power grab over the waterway that moves one fifth of the world’s oil. Tehran is betting the West will blink first while oil prices spike and supply chains buckle.
America and its allies cannot afford weakness here. Allowing Iran to turn a vital international chokepoint into its personal toll booth rewards terrorism and invites more chaos. Strong leadership must enforce freedom of navigation and make clear that such provocations carry real costs.
