Belarusian Woman Denied Visa-Free Entry to Laos Due to Lack of Awareness

From January 15, a visa is no longer required to enter Laos. Citizens of our country can stay there under these conditions for up to 30 days. But difficulties arose.

The innovation was reported on January 15 by the Embassy of Belarus in neighboring Vietnam.

The total period of visa-free stay within a year should not exceed 90 days. If there is a desire to stay in Laos for longer than a month immediately, a visa will have to be obtained.

There is no direct air connection between Belarus and Laos yet. The most budget-friendly option to get there from Minsk in the coming weeks will cost $482 (about 1400 rubles). However, two layovers will be necessary: in Moscow and Guangzhou, China.

But today, January 20, Ksenia contacted Onliner.by. She claims that “in Laos itself, they are not yet aware of the innovation” and she was not allowed into the country visa-free. Ksenia arrived on Tuesday from Malaysia at Wattay International Airport in the capital of Laos — Vientiane.

— This is the country’s largest airport. But I still printed out a document with the necessary information in advance, just in case — it didn’t help.

I was sent from one employee to another, to whom I showed a link to the website of the Embassy of Belarus in Vietnam. By the way, there is no internet at the airport, but one of the employees kindly connected their official network. To everything, they replied: ‘But this is Vietnam!’

— But I explained that the Embassy of Belarus in Vietnam also serves Laos. To this, the airport staff objected: ‘This means the innovation only applies to diplomatic passports.’ Which, again, is not true. As a result, we concluded that they currently have no information about the cancellation of visas for Belarusians.
