Staff Sergeant Johnny “Joey” Jones, the Marine who lost both legs above the knee to an IED in Afghanistan in 2010, raised his right hand again and re-enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserve. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth swore him in at the Pentagon’s Hall of Heroes.
This is what real American steel looks like. After 14 years out of uniform, Jones is back in to pay a debt and strengthen the next generation of fighters.
In his own words from the ceremony: “I’m doing it because I have a debt left to give. What I do at Fox is important, I believe that, but it’s not as important as serving my country.”
He added: “My only goal here is to be of value to a young warfighting force. I’m 40… if I can be a grand old man of lower rank that can provide insight to a young leader figuring it out, I’d LOVE to do that.”
Jones made clear his drive: “The last job I had in uniform, my job was to get better, it was to heal; it’s a very selfish thing. And then I retired. And there’s nothing wrong with that, but it was unfinished business.”
He hopes to inspire others: “I hope a lot of people got out and are inspired to go BACK in and continue to serve!”
Jones knows the cost of war firsthand. He deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan as an explosive ordnance disposal tech, neutralizing dozens of IEDs before that life-changing blast. Medically retired, he built a new life as a Fox News contributor, but the call of duty never faded. Now he’s back in uniform, working Pentagon policy to support EOD Marines and engineers on the ground.
This move under Secretary Hegseth signals a return to warrior culture in the military: prioritizing experience, mentorship, and mission over bureaucracy. No more treating service as a short chapter. Jones proves it’s a lifelong commitment.
