Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth is done with excuses and bureaucratic failure at the Pentagon. In a powerful new announcement, he declared the Department of War will deliver a full clean audit on its 2028 financial statements, ending years of disgraceful mismanagement that has squandered taxpayer dollars and eroded public trust.
Hegseth laid it out straight: “For far too long, this department’s financial reporting has been nothing short of a disaster. Today, that changes… The era of excuses is over. We’re taking a sledgehammer to the broken bureaucratic systems of the past to finally provide the rigorous fiscal responsibility this building so desperately needs.”
Under President Trump, accountability is back. Hegseth announced the launch of the Joint Task Force Audit, a unified team of service members, civilians, and private sector experts. Key moves include slashing the number of disjointed audits by two-thirds, bringing in a world-class accounting firm, and unleashing AI and automation to crush financial weaknesses.
“We will steward every taxpayer dollar as if it belongs to the men and women who earned it, because it does,” Hegseth said. “Break down bureaucratic barriers to get you, the taxpayer, concrete results.”
He praised trailblazers like the Marine Corps, which has sustained clean opinions for three years straight, along with the Defense Logistics Agency and Defense Threat Reduction Agency. Now every branch must match that urgency.
The plan hits milestones hard: clean opinion on 2026 Navy working capital funds, then 2027 defense working capital funds, and full department-wide success in 2028. “These are ambitious, highly aggressive targets. But under this administration, under the leadership of President Trump, we will stop at nothing to best serve the American taxpayer,” Hegseth declared.
