The U.S. Air Force has officially commenced the physical phase of the B-52 Stratofortress’s massive modernization this year, following the successful completion of the Commercial Engine Replacement Program’s (CERP) critical design review in May 2026.
This ambitious project will redesignate the B-52H as the B-52J by replacing its 1960s-era Pratt & Whitney engines with more efficient Rolls-Royce F130 turbofans, while also integrating a new AESA radar, digital cockpit, and advanced weaponry.
The first aircraft is scheduled to arrive at Boeing’s San Antonio facility in late 2026 to begin modifications, a strategic move aimed at slashing operational costs while ensuring the legendary bomber remains a formidable asset capable of serving alongside the B-21 Raider through the 2050s.
