The Lao authorities are currently in contact with the Indian embassy to ensure “safe return” of the individuals to India
The Indian embassy in Lao PDR has rescued 67 Indian youngsters from cyber scam centres in Golden Triangle Special Economic Zone (GTSEZ) of the country. In a statement issued on Monday (January 27, 2025), the Indian mission maintained that the youngsters were “trafficked” and “duped” by dubious employment agencies.
“Immediately after receiving their requests for help, Embassy officials responded to all of them promptly and extended all necessary assistance. A team of Embassy officials travelled to GTSEZ at once and worked closely with concerned Lao authorities to achieve required procedures and paperwork to enable them to leave GTSEZ and travel to the Embassy in Vientiene,” the Indian Embassy in Vientiene said.
Prashant Agrawal, Ambassador of India to Lao PDR, met with the rescued individuals to discuss the challenges that they had faced in near captive condition GTSEZ. The Lao authorities are currently in contact with the Indian embassy to ensure “safe return” of the individuals to India. Ambassador Agarwal has asked the individuals to opt for necessary course of action, including lodging “complaints” against the agents who had cheated them.
In the recent past, a large number of young Indians have been caught in fake job rackets in Myanmar and Lao PDR prompting Indian officials to swing into action to repatriate them. The Indian mission thanked Lao PDR authorities for the support they received in dealing with the situation.
